The Satyanarayana Swamy temple in Annavaram of East Godavari district is one of the most popular temples in north coastal Andhra and the adjoining districts in Orissa state. Located at top the Ratnagiri Hill, the temple resembles a chariot on four wheels. A tank that supplies drinking water to Annavaram is converted; into a picnic spot during the winter months. The annual temple festival is in May and lakhs of devotees throng the small town. The temple is about 3 km from Annavaram town but is situated right on the Chennai – Kolkata NH 5. It has its own choultry to accommodate pilgrims and according to an estimate, at least devotees perform a lakh “vratams” at the temple every year. Annavaram is just a two-hour train journey from Vishakhapatnam and an hour and a half from Rajahmundry, two major cities between Vijayawada and Kolkata. Annavaram railway station is one the Vijayawada-Kolkata mainline. The place is 70 km from Rajahmundry and 120 km from Vishakhapatnam, two important cities that have varied accommodation.
