In 1975 the capital of assam was shifted from old capital shillong to dispur. Dispur is 10km away from guwahati on the guwahati – shillong road. Dispur is a well planned city, tourist attraction of this city cannot be ignored. Guwahati is the city of tea and the auction market has been established in dispur. CTC (crush, tear & curl) tea is auction over here every tuesday and wednesday of the week. Dispur, is currently one of the smallest capital cities in the world with a population of just about 1,700 with Tea is the biggest product produced by the City. Shaivite, Hindu, Vaishnavite, Muslim, Sakta, Buddhist, Christian – people from all religious communities and sects live here peacefully all together. The people of Dispur have in common is their love for the Bihu festivals which takes place in a series of three all of which are characterized by dancing and singing, with people of all ethnicities and cultures take place in these festivals. Their main language is assamese, the other common languages spoken being English and Hindi.
