Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is situated 40 km from Agra.The world city of Fatehpur Sikri had 9 gates being on the eastern side from north to south the gateways are Delhi Darwaza, Lal Darwaza, Agra Darwaza, Suraj Darwaza, Chandar Darwaza and Gwalior Darwaza. On the west are Terha Darwaza, Chor Khirki and Ajmeri Darwaza. From Agra gate one passes the sandstone Tansen’s Baradari on the right and proceeds to the Chahar Suq, the place where the imperial band greeted the Emperor’s appearances in Diwan-i-Am.

Getting There:

Road: One can reach Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km from Agra, by bus or car.Taxis are available on hire from the Cantt. Railways station Agra. Buses for Fatehpur Sikri are available from the Cantt. bus stand and the bijlighar bus stand at regular intervals.

Tourist Attraction:

Diwan-i-Am: The journey to the royal place begins with Diwan-i-Am or the hall of public audience. This hall was also used for celebrations and public prayers. It has cloisters on three side and minor quarters are to the right and a splendid balcony, straight on. The architecture is a blend of styles with Hindu columns and Muslim cupolas. The interior of the rooms had colored decorations.

Birbal’s Palace: To the northwest of Jodhabai’s Palace the two storeyed house occupied by Akbar’s two senior queens – Ruqnyya Begum and Salima Sultan Begum. It has two storeys – four rooms and two porches with pyramidal roofs below, and two rooms with cupolas and screened terraces above. The building combines Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture.

Jami Masjid: Leaving the Royal Palace one proceeds across the car park to the Jami Masjid, the sacred section of Fatehpur Sikri. This is one of the largest mosques in India. Inside is the vast congregational courtyard. To the night, at the corner is the Jameet Khana hall and next to this is the tomb of Royal Ladies. To the left of the Jami Masjid is the stone cutter’s mosque, the oldest place of worship at Sikri. It is entire through the eastern entrance known as the Badshashi Darwaja.

Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti: The brilliant white marble tomb dominates the northern half of the courtyard. It is a masterpiece of marble work in India. The carved pillar bases and lattice screens surrounding the pavilion are stunning pieces of craftsmanship. The interior walls are lined with white marble while pillars are of ivory. The canopy over the tomb is inlaid with mother of pearl. People of all religions pray at the shrine. Next to it, within the courtyard, is the larger red stone tomb of Nawab Islam Khan, Sheikh Salim’s grandson and other members of its family.

Buland Darwaza: This gate can be approach from the outside by a 13 mts. flight of steps, which adds to its grandeur. The gate was erected in the year 1602 A.D. It is the highest and the grandest in India and ranks among the biggest in the world. The gateway measures 176 ft. from the pavement to the top and there are 123 flights of steps to the top from the street below. The doorway is richly inscribed with texts from the Koran cut in bold Arabic letters.

An epic rendered; in red sandstone, this magnificent complex not only records the architectural excellence of Akbar’s times and his victories in battle, but is also an everlasting tribute to the legendary Muslim saint, Sheikh Salim Chishti. To perpetuate the memory of the compassionate saint, Akbar constructed a charming mosque, pristine in execution and appearance, in the midst of Sikri complex. Thus, the white marble mausoleum of Sheikh Salim Chishti with its unusual carvings, decorated with tiny mother-of-pearl discs held together by minute shimmering gold pins and the soft silence within, endow it with an ethereal quality. Every year, childless women of all faiths come to pray at the Sheikh’s tomb to evoke his blessings for progeny. Hundreds of skeins of coloured thread are tied on the trellised stonework inside for wish fulfillment. His Urs (death anniversary) is celebrated during winter with great devotion by his followers. U. P. Tourism’s Gulistan Tourist Complex provides good accommodation facilities. Other civic amenities are available at neighbouring town Agra.

Getting There:

Fatehpur Sikri, 37 km. from Agra is connected by regular bus services of UPSRTC to Agra and neighbouring centers. Regular conducted tours are also operated bus UPSTDC, UPSRTC and other tour operators from Agra.

Getting There:

Air: Daily flight from Delhi to Agra 30 minutes journey. Kheria airport is just 6 km from city.

Rail: Agra is linked to Delhi by excellent train services.

Road: Agra is well connected to Mathura, Delhi 204 km away.

Tourist Attraction:

Taj Mahal: The construction of this marble masterpiece is credited to the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who erected this mausoleum in memory of his beloved wife, Arjumand Bano Begam, popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1630 A.D. Her last whish to her husband was “to build a tomb in her memory such as the world has never seen before”.Agra Fort: The construction of the Agra Fort was started around 1565 when Akbar built the intial structures. Shah Jahan replaced most of these with his marble creations some however survived, among them are – Delhi Gate, Amar Singh Gate, Akbar Mahal and the Jahangiri Mahal.

Ram Bagh: It was created by Emperor Babar and is one of the earliest Mughal garden. History says that Babar was temporarily buried here, before being interred at Kabul.

Chini-ka-Rauza: It is located 5 km from Agra Fort. Chini-ka-Rauza is the mausoleum of Afzal Khan, a Persian poet and Jahan’s Prime Minister. Parts of its walls are stillcovered with coloured emailed tiles (Chini) that gave the tomb its name.

Itmad-ud-Daula Tomb: It is located 6 km from Agra Fort. The tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg – the father of Empress Nur Jahan. It is the first Mughal building to be faced with white marble and contrasting stones. Itmad-ud-Daula is the tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, a Persian who had obtained service in Akbar’s court. The tomb set a startling precedent as the first Mughal building to be faced with white inlaid marble and contrasting stones. Unlike the Taj it is small, intimate and has a gentle serenity.Sikandra: It is located 10 km from Agra fort. A suburb of Agra and the final resting place of Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Sur Sarovar: Sur Sarovar is situated 27 km from Agra within Surdas reserve forest. It is in fact, a tranquil spot, ideal for relaxed outings. A wide variety of fishes and water birds at to the Lake’s natural charm and beauty.

Patna Bird Sanctuary: Located in the Jalesar town of Etah district, 54 km from Agra, the Patna Bird Sanctuary is spread over an area of 108 hectares. Over 300 different species of exotic birds cluster here during the breeding season in winter months. The intertwined date trees convert the sanctuary scenically into a mini Goa.

Braj Bhoomi: Braj Bhoomi is situated 56 km from Agra. The birthplace of Lord Krishna, along the banks of Yamuna, is just an hour drive by car from Agra. The land is replete with imposing temple, each dedicated to the stages of the Lord’s life. Among the importance temples at Mathura and Vrindavan are Govid Dev Temple, Rangaji Temple, Dwarkadhish Temple, etc.

Shauripur: Shauripur is situated 72 km from Agra.The ruins of the old city of Shauripur are 2 km further north of Bateshwar. A group of five Jain Temples is here, atop the village mound. According to Jain mythology, Shauripur was the birthplace of the 22nd Tirthankar Neminath, the son of the King of Shauripur.
