Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary was built in 1975 for bird lovers.The area of this sanctuary is 0.67sq km surrounded by the cauveri river.The Cauvery river flows around a string of tiny islets, which together form a superb nesting site for waterfowl. Experience the excitement of a boat ride that takes you within an arm’s length of the birds as the crocodiles bathe in the sun.From june to november migratory birds come here and build nests here on the 750m high island.The most common birds  are  Openbilled Storks, Black Cormorants, River Terns, Painted Storks, Little Egrets, Night Herons, Spot billed Pelicans, Darters.Apart from birds u can also find here mammals like Bonnet Macaque, Monitor Lizard, Flying Box, Indian Gray Mangoose etc.The best season to come this sanctuary is december because the migratory birds are visible at this time only.

The district is full of diversities.Western ghat mountain bows before the sea in mercara.The natural beauty of the evergreen forests ,the blusish hill under the cover of night-fog in winter make the city pleasant and beautiful.Entering Mercara bus stand, you will find municipal office and prison in the premises of the fort built in 1812-14 AD by Lingarajendra WadeyarII.From this fort on the peak of the mountain the whole city is visible.There is the Omkareswar Temple founded by Lingaraj in 1820.The temple was built in keralian hindu and muslim style of architecture.The main attraction of Mercara is the Tal or Thala Cauvery, the origin of the river cauvery on kodagu mountain.Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls, Cauvery Nisargadhama, Talacauvery, Bhagamandala, Virajpet, Bylekuppe, Dubare forest, Harangi Dam, Tadiyendamol, Valnur fishing camp are close at hand.People of Madikeri are very interesting and charming.Kodaba community dominates almost the whole population of madikeri.

Favourite Food: Pandhi (meat of pig) curry and Kudumbuttu (rice).

Cubbon Park: This beautiful park, which spreads over 300 acres in the heart of the city, serves as the lung space of the overgrowing Bangalore city. Designed by Lt. General Sir Mark Cubbon, in 1864, is dotted with beautiful statues, flowering trees, fountains and a library in its midst.

Tipu Sultan’s Fort and Palace: A very small portion of the mud fort built by Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, stands to this day, which is a far cry from the original. But the summer Palace of the great hero, Tipu Sultan, built in wood and ornately decorated, remains untouched by the vagaries of time.

Vishveshwaraya Industrial & Technological Museum: This museum is a tribute to Sir. M. Vishveshwaraya the Architect of modern Karnataka, a must see for students and Science buffs, which presents the amazing wealth of modern science.

Lalbagh Gardens: This expense of greenery is one of India’s most beautiful botanical garden. Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan laid it out in 18th century. Within the Gardens there is a beautiful lake with water spread area of 1.5 sq. kms dotted with picturesque tiny islands. It is a good picnic spot.

Sir Gavu Gangadareshwara Temple: A unique phenomenon of this cave temple is the sunlight passing through the horns of the bull to light up the Gavu Gangadareshwara idol on the day of Makara Sankranthi i.e. January 14th or 15th every year.

Devarayanadurga: This hillock is famous for the historical Temples of Yoga Narasimah and Bhoga Narasimha. It is situated at 71 kms from Bangalore. Another attraction of this place is the Natural Water Spring called Namada Chilume.

Dodda Aladamara: This place is located at 28 kms from Bangalore. The huge 400 years old banyan tree spreading over 3 acres is a botanical wonder. It is a perfect Picnic Spot.
