Sri Brahadeeswarar Temple

The Brahadeeswarar Temple, called the big temple is dedicated Lord Shiva. It is an outstanding example of Chola architecture. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Monument. The 64.8 mts. tall tower over the sanctum is testimony to the engineering skill of the Chola. In keeping with the size of the temple, it has a gigantic “Mahalingam” in the shrine, measuring 4 mts. in height. Beautiful Choal fresco paintings adorn the inner walls of the temple. The Chola architects conceptualized the construction in such a way that the shadow of the cupola never falls on the ground.

Karaivetai Vettaikudi Bird Sanctuary

It is located from 35 km from Thanjavur and 65 km from Tiruchi. Karaivetai Vettaikudi Birds’ Sanctuary sprawls over 454 hc. of area. It is a large irrigation reservoir with water storage capacity of 228.5 mcft. The sanctuary has more than 100 species of birds from other countries, 8 species of mammals, 18 species of replies 15 varieties of fish. It is a wonderful sight to watch a large number of birds from other parts of India and foreign land like Siberia and Russia visiting the lake to feed, rest and breed. Notable once are bareheaded goose, gray pelican, glossy ibis, white stork, rosy pastors, golden orioles and 13 species of ducks and 19 species of small waders. One can get better view in the early morning or evening. Best time to visit is between November and January.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

This famous Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 51 km from Ooty, at a height of 900 to 1140 mts. and has an area of 324 sq. km. Elephant, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, mouse, deer, panther, bear, wild bear, wild dog, hyena, porcupine and other animals may be spotted in the sanctuary. Tigers and Leopards are found deep inside the forest of Sal, Teak, Sandal, Eucalyptus and Deodar. Grey and brown monkeys, along with thousand of birds are also found. A Varity of butterflies and owls are also present. Pythons, Cobras, Rat Snakes are some of the reptiles. The best for a tourist are from February to April and from September to October. The best time to see the wild animals are from 06:00 hrs to 08:00 hrs and from 16:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs. The nearest airport is Ooty. Regular buses services are available.

Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is situated at a distance of 40 km from Pollachi and 100 km from Coimbatore, at an altitude of 1,400 mts. in the Western Ghats near Pollachi. The area of the sanctuary is 958 sq. km. It has various kinds of wild fauna like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, pangolin, black-headed oriole, green pigeon and civet cat. The Amaravathy Reservoir in the Anamalai has a large number of crocodiles. There are also many places of scenic beauty such as Karain shola, Anaikunthi shoal, Grass hills, waterfalls, groves, teak forests, estates, dams and reservoirs. Arrangements are available at top slip to take tourist around the sanctuary on elephant back or by van.

Yercaud is located on the Servaroyan hill, in Salem district. Yercaud is a hill station visited by tourist throughout the year. Its altitude 1500 mts. places of interest include the lake, Anna Park, Orchidorium, Lady’s Seat, Pagoda Point, Bear’s Cave and the Servaroyan Temple.

The Suruli Falls situated in Theni district, which falls from a height of 150 ft. gathers into a pool, flows for a short distance and again plummets to a depth of 40 ft., offering a spectacular sight of nature’s rare and wild beauty. The dense forest that surrounds it’s provided an awesome backdrop. Facilities are available for men and women to bathe separated in this falls. The special features of this falls is that it is ‘a round the year’ fall. However the best season to visit is June to October, when the thickness of the water column is astounding. The beauty of this fall finds mention in Tami Epic. Kailasanathar  Temple Cave is located near Suruli Falls. There are 18 caves in and around the Suruli Falls. The Kailasanathar Cave Temple is situated 800 mts. above the falls and has a spring, which possesses water curative power. A Dargah named after Abubacker Masthan is another important place of worship in Suruli. This is the place where the body of Abubacker Masthan is intered. This very close to the cave temple of Kailasanathar.

Government Museum, National Art Gallery and Connemara Library is the Pantheon complex, built before 1789 and was the place of assemblage for the British still it was bought by the Government in 1830. Later, several new building was added to it. Today this complex houses the Government Museum, the National Art Gallery and the Connemara Public Library. The museum has the country’s best collection of South Indian Bronzes among which beautiful bronze icons of Nataraja, Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman are worth mentioning. The museum has geology and anthropology section. Amaravathy Gallery contains rare second century marble sculptures, which depict importance events in the life of Gautama Buddha. The National Art Gallery exhibits several beautiful paintings of Rajasthana period, Mughal period and 17th century Deccani Art.

Vivekananda House(Museum)

Vivekananda House

Vivekananda Museum is an imposing building on the Marina along the beach road constructed in 1842 to store ice bars imported from the U.S.A. This is why it is called ICE HOUSE even to this day. Later this building was purchased by Bilagiri Iyyenger in 1885. Swami Vivekananda stayed in this historic building from February 6 to 15 in 1897. The Government took over the building in 1930 and in 1963 it was named after Vivekananda. The photographs depicting the historical happenings associated with his life are displayed here in the museum.

Manora is situated 65 km from Thanjavur, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal is Sarabendrajanpattinam village, about 20 km south of Pattukottai town. Manora is a grand old town with lovely architecture and scenic surrounding. There is a historical monument of note here. Manora is a memorial tower built in 1814 A.D. in commemoration of the Victory of British army over Nepoleon Bonoparte, the French Emperor, in the historic “Battle of Waterloo”. Manora is a pleasing blend of Roman pillar architecture. The sea, the breeze and the fisherman’s houses make Manora a nice place to visit.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is situated 48 km from Chidambaram. Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the palace have been built between 1023 and 1029 A.D. and around Gangaikonda Cholapuram one can visit places of interest and tourists attractions and landmarks of religion and new surge of creativity of the 10th and 11th century. Gangaikonda Cholapuram may look today of a tiny village but its glory and grandeur vividly come to the visitor’s mind when he looks at the majestic temple, the frail wall, mounds of sand heats. The city was carefully planned and built with high wall. The palace has many stories. The lofty Srivimana of the temple lifts its stately head as if scanning the vast arena of the Bygone Empire. The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, built in brick and motar is unique. The name of the deity in the sanctum is Pariaudayar. The Lingam is 60 ft. high, the stone above the base is sixteen and half feet long and thirteen and half feet wide. Another speciality in construction of this temple is that the rays of the sun always fall in the sanctum even though the entrance is facing the east. It is a marvel of the construction. The temple tower is gracious with all feminine elegance and charm as the tower bends a little. The unique feature of the temple is delectable set of sculptures found on the garbagraha walls numbering as many as 50. They are boldly conceived and executed.  It is a wonder that the bronzes of the temple survived nearly a thousand years. The metal images of Shiva and Uma, forming perhaps the biggest set among such icons of the Cholas are of outstanding beauty and grandeur.

Vellore is now pulsating with activities as a commercial, administrative, educational and medical centre. Vellore grew into bustling town gradually since the 6th century changing the rulers and growing in importance. Vellore has the renowned Christian medical College and Hospital where patients from all corners get advanced medical treatment.

Air: 140 km from Chennai is the nearest airport.

Rail: Katpadi railway station is situated 5 km from Vellore town.

Road: Buses are available from Chennai and Bangalore.

Vellore Fort: Dating back to the 13th century this ancient fort is the main attraction for the tourist. This historical famous fort retains the past glory with its ramparts, basements, turrets, posts, sally gates and with perennial water supply. It is fortified by double wall and the main walls are mode of massive granite blocks laid one over the other without using any mortar. It was describe as the strongest fortress.

Muthu Mandapam: This is the memorial built around the tombstone of Vikramraja Singh, the last Kandy Tamil ruler. Situated on the bank of Palar River, it is just 1 km north of Vellore town at a walking distance.

Jalagandeeswarar Temple: Temple inside the fort is dedicated to Jalagandeeswarar and is noted for its sculptures, which speaks volumes of the exquisite craftsmanship of the highly skilled artisans of that period. The sculptures in the porch on the left of the entrance are masterpieces appreciated by the connoisseurs. It has a big marriage hall adorned with elegant reliefs and monolithic sculptures.

Government Museum: This is a multipurpose museum maintained by the department of museums Government of Tamil Nadu. It treasures ancient and present day curios relating to Anthropology, Art and Archeology, Botany, Geology, Numismatics, Pre-History, Zoology, etc. Historical Monuments of the erstwhile composite North Arcot District are gracefully depicted in the gallery. This museum is kept open on all days between 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. except on holidays. Admission is free.

C.M.C. Medical College: If Vellore attracts a floating population of 5,000 every day, it is because of the world famous C.M.C. founded in the early part of the century by a dedicated American Medical Missionary Dr. Idda Scudder. Besides a world famous Cancer Ward and Neurological Ward, it has a Mental Health Hospital and a College of Nursing.

Vallimalai: This temple is situated on the top of a small hill, which can be ascended through a flight of 300 steps. The principal deity is Lord Subramania. The temple was build about 1,500 years ago. Most part of the temple looks like a cave of the hill.

Mordhana Dam: It is a picnic spot where the dam is constructed between two hills.

Amirthi Forest

Amirthi Forest: 24 km south of Vellore is the panoramic Amirthi Forest, rich in its variety of flora and fauna. A half of the jungle is cleared to serve as a tourist spot while the other half is developed as a Wildlife Sanctuary. A trek for a km leads one to full view of seasonal waterfalls.

Padavedu: Padavedu is situated 35 km from Vellore. Padavedu now a desolate village having two important ancient temples is an interesting place of pilgrimage. There are beautiful carvings depicting the invitation of Parasurama by Shri Renuka Devi.

Thiruvallam: Thiruvallam is located 22 km of Vellore on the western bank of the Nuga River, a tributary of Palar River, is famous for ancient Shiva Temple. A note worthy feature of this shrine is that the Nandi is not facing the Lord but facing the east.

Javadu Hills

Javadu Hills: Jamnamaruthur is situated 40 km from Polur is the main village in Javadu hills, which is famous for its sandalwood and fruit bearing trees. It is an altitude of from 300 – 1000 mts. The Beemanmadavu water falls in the thick reserve forest 12 km from here is worth for hard-trek. The night stay here is a new experience due to the solitude of the hill.

Virinjipuram: Virinjipuram is situated 19 km from Vellore. It is magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located on the southern bank of the River Palar. Around the basement and the pillars of the temple are a number of well-executed figures singly and in lively groups in dramatic settings representing scenes in the social life of the people. There are several inscriptions here both in Grantham and Tamil. The Lion-faced Simmakulam tank is considered to be very scared.

Santhome at the southern end of Marina derives its name from Saint Thomas, and apostle of Christ who is believed to have come to Chennai sometime during 52 A.D. It is believed he was killed on Saint Mount just outside the city in 78 A.D. and interned in Santhome Beach where a Church later built. The beautiful stained glass windows at the Bacilica portray the story of Saint Thomas and the central hall has 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes of the last days of Christ. In the Cathedral is a 3 feet height Statue of Virgin Marry.

Once a flourishing port of the Pallavas of ancient India, this monument centre is today a major beach resort holiday centre in south India. Places to see include the Shore Temple, the five Rathas and Arjuna’s Penance and the Tiger’s Cave. About 14 km north is a Crocodile Farm and 17 km west is Tirukkalunkkundram, a pilgrim centre known for its holy kites. There are boating facilities at Muttukadu backwaters. Midway between Chennai and Mamallapuram there are amusement complexes like VGP Golden Beach, MGM Dizzy World and Little Folks.

Air: The nearest airport is 50 km from Chennai.

Rail: Nearest railway station is Chengalpattu 30 km from Chennai.

Road: Frequent buses are available from Chennai and other important towns.

Elagiri Hill(Yelagiri Hill)

Elagiri Hill

Introduction:

Elagiri Hill is one of the hill stations in Tamil Nadu. Situated amidst four mountains in a serene atmosphere, it is well for its salubrious climate prevailing over there throughout the year. Elagiri hilltop can be reached by a winding ghat road, which has 14 hairpin bends. The hairpin bends offer panoramic, breath taking views. The seventh hairpin bend is significant, since it offers the view of the slopes of the mountain and the green forest covering as a carpet of the hill.

Getting There:

Air: Nearest airport at Chennai (220 km) and Bangalore (160 km).

Rail: Jalarpet railway junction (19 km).

Road: Buses are available from Jalarpet railway junction on Chennai–Bangalore / Coimbatore Sector, Tiruppathur, Vaniyambadi and Vellore.

Punganur Lake

Punganur Lake

Punganur Lake: It is an artificial lake excavated in an area of 56,706 sq. meters. Boating on the waters of this lake can be an enchanting experience. An artificial fountain has been installed at the center of the lake, which sprinkle water up to 15 ft. height. The fountain is illuminated at nights with colorful lighting arrangements.

Children’s Park: A well laid out park on a 6-acre land adjacent to the lake is established for the delights of the children visiting Elagiri. Varieties of children’s play materials are installed within the park.

Mini Zoo: A small zoo has been established in an impressive manner and environment.

Velavan Temple: A temple for Lord Murugan is located atop a hillock. The location of this temple also serves as a viewpoint from where one could have the pleasure of viewing the green woods of the Elagiri Hill. Festivals of this temple are conducted during the Tamil month of Adi (July – August). A gigantic sculpture of Gadothgajan in a freestanding poture is erected in front of this temple.

Government Fruit Farm: Botanical Garden at Athanavur and Nilavur have varieties of fruit bearing trees and plants which bear flowers of various hews and shapes.

Government Herbal Farm: The forest department maintains a herbal farm adjacent to the Punganur Lake where herbs and shrubs are cultivated to produce the main ingredients in producing Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine.

Telescope House: It has been installed on the ghat road for the benefit of the tourist to have glimpses of the slopes and terrains of the hill.

Excursion:

Jalagamparai Water Fall: ‘Attaru’ River passes through the Elagiri Hills and falls from 30 mts. height at Jadaiyanur on the other side of the hill. This could either be reached from Tiruppathur (15 km) or by an hour’s trek from the hills. Adjacent to the Jalagamparai falls, there is a Murugan temple located within a building constructed in the shape of Lingam.

Vainu Pappu Solar Observatory Kavalur: The biggest solar observatory is situated in Kavalur, which are 35 km from Tiruppathu and 25 km from Elagiri. It could also be accessed from Vaniyambadi (30 km). All are welcome on Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. without permission. A large variety of Deer roam around the observatory.

Adventure Activities:

There are avenues for organizing adventure tourism activities like trekking, mountaineering, rock climbing and hang-gliding in the hills and the slopes. Forest department of Tiruppathur may be approached for assistance and guides to trek through Elagiri hill.

Vaitheeswaran Koil is situated 24 km from Chidambaram and 6 km from south of Sirkazhi. It has a large and important Shiva Temple. A large number of women visit this place to dispossess themselves of devils and pray for their marriage. Vaitheeswaran is the healer of all diseases. It is believed that a bath in the holy water of the Siddhamirtham tank (Holy Tank) situated within the temple complex, cures all ailments. Tourist can visit this place by train and road.

Rameshwaran Temple is renowned for its many pillared corridors 1,220 mts. in length.
