Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is located Khammam district. Its area is 656 sq km. Dry deciduous Teak forest with Bamboo, Terminallias, Anogeissus etc. are found here. The Kinnerasani Lake is very picturesque. Animals found are Tiger, Panther, and Gaur. Cheetal, Black buck, Chinkra, Chowsingha, Sambar, Wild boar, Wild dog, Hyena, Jackal, Sloth bear and a variety of ground nesting and aquatic birds. The Kinnerasani lake and water pools harbor marsh crocodile. Accommodation is available at the Forest rest house at Paloncha and Kothagudem. Best season to visit October to June.

It is located in Adilabad district. Its area is 136 sq. km. Dry deciduous Teak forest along river Pranahita, a tributary of river Godavari are found here. The terrain is undulating and supports Tiger, Panther, Sloth bear, Cheetal, Black Buck, Nilgai and a variety of birds including Brahminy duck, Teals, Storks and Herons. Accommodation is available at the Forest rest house at Mancherial and Chinnur. Best season to visit November to April.

Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary

Located 15 km from Medak and 115 km from Hyderabad, this sanctuary can be reached by private transport from Medak. Pocharam Forest was the favourite hunting ground of the Nizam and he declared it as a wild life sanctuary in the early part of 20th century. Named after the Pocharam lake formed form bunding of the Allair in the year 1916-1922, it is spread over 9.12 Sq. km. Surrounded by lush green forest, it is rich in flora and fauna and attracts a lot of winged visitors, like the Bar-Headed Goose, Brahminy Bucks and Open Billed Stork. There is a centre for Eco-Tourism where visitors can see five species of Antelopes and Deer, summer temperature goes up to 46° C and in winter it drops to 6° C. The sanctuary is home to animals like Leopard, Forest Cat, Wild Dog, wolf, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Nilgai, Chinkra, Chital, and four horned Antelope. Best season to visit is November to January.

This sanctuary is located at Chittoor District. Its area is 358 km. Southern tropical thorn type of forests consisting of Albizzias and Ficus species. Animals found are Indian Elephant, Sloth bear. Panther, Cheetal, Chowsingha, Sambar, Porcupine, Wild boar, Jungle cat, Jackal, Jungle fowl and Slender Loris. Accommodation is available at Forest guesthouse at Palamaneru. Best season to visit October to April.

It is situated at Warangal district. Its area is 879 sq. km. Dry deciduous Teak forest with Bamboo, Madhuca, Terminalia, Pterocarpus etc. are found here. Animals found are Tiger, Panther, Gaur, Sambar, Nilgai, Cheetal, Wild boar, Sloth bear, Wild dog, Hyena, Jackal, Fox and migratory birds like Ducks, Teals, Ibises, Storks and Cormorants. Accommodation is available at the Forest and Tourist rest houses at Pakhal. Best season to visit November to June.

Gundla Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is located at Kurnool and Prakasam districts. Its total area is 1194 sq km. Mixed deciduous forests of Teak, Pterocarpuss, Terminalia. Albizzia, Anogeissius, Dalbergia, Boswellia, Shisham, Andug and Bamboo. The Gundlabrahmeswaram plateau runs South-North of the Nallamalai hill range and a perennial river, Gundlakamma crisis crosses through the sanctuary. Animals found are Tiger, Panther, Sloth bear, and Wild dog, Hyena. Jungle cat, Langur, Bonnet monkey, Pangolin, Sambar, Nilgai, Chowsingha, Chinkara, Mouse deer, Monitor lizard, Python and Marsh crocodile. Accommodation is available in the Inspection Bungalow at Nandyal and Forest rest house at Diguvametta. Best season to visit October to May.

Rail: 100 km from Kurnool railway station or 30 km from Nandyal railway station.

It is located at Warangal district. Its area is 806 sq km. Dey deciduous Teak forest with Bamboo, Pterocarpus, Anogeissus, Buchanania etc. are hound here. Rolling country with low hills with Tiger, Panther, Gaur, Sambar, Cheetal, Nilgaim Black buck, Chowsingha, Barking Deer, Wild boar, Wolf, Jackal, Fox, Jungle cat and a variety of birds. Spending the day walking along forest paths or staying the night amidst sylvan surroundings is exciting. Cottages maintained by the Forest Department at Eturunagaram and nearby Tadvai offer comfortable accommodation for tourists. The best time to visit is between October and May, before the onset of summer and monsoon.

    This sanctuary is located East Godavari district. Its area is 236 sq km. The sanctuary is part of the estuary of river Godavari and supports a rich growth of mangrove vegetation with plants like Rhizophora, Avicennia, Sonneratia, Aegiceros etc. Animals found are Fishing cat, Otter, Jackal, Sea turtle and estuarine crocodile, which are found in the creeks. Among the birds most common are Seagulls, Storks, Herons, Snipes, Ducks and Flamingos. Accommodation is available in the forest rest house at Coringa and Rajahmundry. Best season to visit October to May.

    Rail: 20 km from Kakinada railway station and 70 km from Rajahmundry.

    Dudhwa National Park

    General Information:

    Location : Along the Indo-Nepal border in the Lakhimpur-Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.

    Area : 614 sq. km.

    Altitude : 150-183 mts.

    Temperature : Max. 40°C and Min. 20°C in Summer.Max. 30°C and Min. 4°C in Winter.

    Clothing : Cotton in summer and light woolen in winter. Preferably “Khaki”, olive green, gray or other inconspicuous clothing which does not alarm or scare away the animal.

    Best season : November 15th to June 15th. The Reserve remains close between June 15th to November 15th.

    Dudhwa National Park

    Introduction:

    A mosaic of grasslands, marshes, lakes and Sal forests constitute the Dudhwas Tiger Reserve. It is as wild as can be. This Tiger Reserve with an area of 614 sq. km is one of the finest productive terai eco-systems. It is home to a large number of rare endangered species, which include Tigers, Leopards, Swamp Deer, Hispid Hare, Bengal Florican, etc. Dudhwa has also the ideal kind of terrain for the Indian Rhino. About 1800 Barasingha are to be found in the Reserve and majestic herds are specially seen in the grassy wetland of the Sathina and Kakraha blocks. The Reserve has also a fair density of Tiger. Standing as it does at the top of the food chain, the Tiger can only be protected by the total conservation of its natural environment. Despite its numbers, sightings of the Tigers are rare, due to the dense nature of the forest cover. Dudhwa did have a large herd of Elephants. A herd of about 30 animals that migrated here after the destruction of their habitat in Nepal. The Reserve, however, does have a range of fascinating wild life. Included in their number are Sloth Deer, Ratel, Civet, Jackle, the Lesser Cats like the Leopard Cat, Fishing Cat and Jungle Cat, varieties of Deer – the beautiful spotted Deer or Chetal, Hog Deer and Barking Deer. The hispid Hare, a dark brown animal with bristly fur. The short nosed Crocodile – the Mugger and Otters can be seen along the riverbanks as well as Pythons and Monitor Lizards. A bird watchers’ haven Dudhwa is noted for its avian variety – about 400 species. Its swamps and several lakes attract varieties of waterfowl. Being close to the Himalayan foothills, Dudhwa also gets its regular winter visitors – the migratory water birds. The banke Tal is perhaps the most popular spot for bird watchers. There are Egrets, Cormorands, Herons and several species of Duck, Geese and Teal. Dudhwa has the Sarus, Crane – elegant in its gray and red livery, black-necked storks, white-necked storks, painted storks, open billed storks and adjutant storks. Raptors like the gray headed Fishing Eagle, Pallas Fishing Eagle and Marsh Harriers can be seen circling over the lake in search of prey – creating pandemonium among the water fowl as they swoop low. An extraordinary range of Owls is also to be found at the Reserve. These include the Great Indian Horned Owl, the Brown Fish Owl, the dusky Horned Owl, Scopes Owl, Jungle Owlet, the Brown Wood Owl and Tawany Fish Owl. Ccolourful birds such as varieties of Woodpeckers, Barbets, Minivets, Bulbuls, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, Orioles, Drongos and Hornbills are all parts of its rich bird life.

    Rail: Nearest railway stations Dudhwa 4 km, Palia 10 km,Mailani (37 km).

    Road: From Lucknow: Lucknow-Sitapur-Lakhimpur-Biju-Bhira-Palia-Dudwa (219 km) or Lucknow-Sitapur-Lakhimpur-Shardanagar-Nighasan-Palia-Dudwa (230 km approx.).

    Introduction:

    Sundarbans are the paradise of lovers of Nature and Eco-tourism.It is the world’s largest mangrove forests. Owing its name to sundari trees, the masngroves forests consist of genwa, dhundal,. Garan, passur, garjan and kankra among a variety of other trees, which can thrive in the saline water.
    Sunderbans is world famous for the home of Royal Bengal Tigers. Among the world, sundarban providing home to the largest number of tigers, are also home to a variety of fauna including the largest deltaic crocodiles, dolphins, the king cobra, lizards, pythons, olive ridley, checkered killback, gangetic gharial giant turtle and deer;and a variety of resident and migratory birds including heron, egret, cormorant, fishing eagle, seagull, kingfisher, whimprel, black-tailed godwit, little sting, easter knot, curlew, sandpiper, golder plover, pintall and whistling teal. Situated on the lower end of the Gangetic West Bengal,the Sunderbans comprise of a land of 54 tiny islands, cris-crossed by innumerable tributaries and branches of River Ganga and creeks and backwaters all over. The whole area is now the abode of the varied flora, fauna and human population. 70% of the area of 9639 sq. km. being under saline water, it makes the life of the commons, mostly honey-seekers, prawn and crab-catchers and fishermen,very difficult. Among the places that a tourist must visit are the Project Tige, Sudhanyakhali, Netidhopani, Lothian Island Bird Sanctuary, Mayadwip, Kalasdwip, Bhagatpur crocodile Project, Piyali and Kaikhali. Sundarban declared as a Biosphere Reserve(World Heritage Site) by UNESCO in 1997, the Sunderbans provide one of the rarest opportunities to have an intense feeling of animal-loving, bird-watching, nature-loving and being lost in the midst of forest and backwater everywhere.

    Getting There:

    Sundarban is only access by boat.Tourists must take a permit from west Bengal tourist centre(2/3 BBD Bagh East near the post office) in Kolkata.

    Air: Kolkata airport is the nearest airport of sundarban.The distance is only 112km.From there you can go to sundarban by bus or taxi.

    Train: Canning station(48km) is the nearest railhead to go sundarban.Canning station is well connected to sealdah and howrah in Kolkata.

    Bus: Road transport corporation buses are available to go sundarban from many cities of west Bengal.

    Haliday Reserve Forest

    At the mouth of the Matla river on the Holiday Island is a reserve forest.This forest is very dense and dark.During winter,two or three days before and after the full moon and the new moon,the sea turtles come to lay eggs on Holiday and Kalash Islands.If one progress further north,leaving Holiday Island behind,the Matla river widens at this point.At the right turn,along this path is Netidhopani Ghat.There is sweet water pond and a watch tower.Spring and Winter season is best for visit.

    Introduction:

    Gorumara is West Bengal’s fifth National Park.This Sanctuary  is famous for its flora and fauna.The park has recorded fifty species of mammals, three hundred species of birds, twenty species of reptiles, and thirty species of amphibians. It is home to the Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros.n this jungle consisting of trees like the odar, bahera, sirish, katush, berry, silk cotton and many other.A rare variety of peacocks display in winter.Forest department has opened Gorumara Nature Department Centre.Another attraction is Chukchuki Bird Observation Centre. Hornbills, Woodpeckers, Minivets, Pheasants, Cuckoos, cormorants, Mynas, Orioles and Pigeons are major bird species seen in Gorumara. Forest bungalows are available for stay at Murti and Gorumara.

    Air: Bagdogra (13 km from Siliguri) is the nearest airport,which is approximately 140 km from Madarihat .

    Rail: Nearest railway station is Madarihat, 7 km from Gorumara National Park.

    Road: National highway 31 which connects Siliguri and Guwahati passes Lataguri (about 75km from Siliguri), Chalsa and Nagrakata near the park.

    Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

    General Information:

    Date of establishment: 1959.

    Area: 159square.kilometers.

    Location: The sanctuary is at a distance of only 13kms from Siliguri and comes under Darjeeling Wildlife division.

    Main Wildlife Found: Royal Bengal Tiger, gigantic elephants, sturdy Indian bison, timid spotted, barking deer.

    Best Time to Visit: Throughout the Year

    Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is in the valleys between Teesta and Mahananda.Taking the Hill Cart road piercing through the sal forest crossing Sukhna river 1/2km further is the entrance of the sanctuary.Afte crossing the Panchnai river begins dark and dense forest. Tigers, elephants, samber, cheetah, himalayan black bear, wild boar, different spices of deer and other wild animals roam around in the green shadowed Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. Different types of birds is also in this jungle.Nature Observation Centre,Medical Research Centre, Orchidorium is there in the forest.An exciting jungle safari in the sanctuary includes the regions of Siliguri- Sukna – Golaghat – Gulma- Laltong and can be a real thrilling experience.

    In 1941 Jaldapara Reserve Forest has been grown up.In Jaldapara,there are   tiger,elephant,leopard, dark, peacock, sambar,boar and many other animals. The   chief sight is one horned rhino .Here tourists can ride on the back of elephant   to see the jungle and wild animals activities. In this forest river Torsha and   Malangi flow by from east to west.There is salt thick on the river bank,the   animals come to lick the salt and to quench their thirst.Leopard Rearing Centre   is there.To stay, there are Bungalows surrounded by green scenery.Best season   for tour is from oct-may.
