In January 2007, the name of the state was officially changed from Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand. Uttaranchal is formed recently getting detached from another state of India namely Uttarpradesh. “The state is a new addition as a 26th state to the Union of India.” Formerly it was the northern part of Uttarpradesh. As a part of Western Himalaya,Uttaranchal starts from the foothill of Shivalik range to Greater Himalaya.Tibet is situated at the northeast of the state.”Himachal Pradesh(A state of india) is at the northwest while Uttarpradesh is surrounded by its West and North.”Uttaranchal can be divided into two hilly divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon.According to Hindu legends the two divisions are known as Land Of Gods.Both the divisions have a traditional ancient history. Huen-Tsang visited the place in 7th century when Kumaon had been ruled out by the Katyuri dynasty. Many architectural innovation was introduced like katarmal temple in the period of their dynasty. In 8th century Adi Sankaracharya,the spiritual reformer visited Garhwal and built a Math name Joshimath. He also restored many Shrines like Kedarnath and Badrinath. Uttaranchal is rich in natural flora & fauna,ancient architecture and excellent scenic beauty hill which attract millions tourist every year. Different travel spot like Deheradoon, Haridwar, Ranikhet, Almora, Koushani etc. offer a splendid view of the snowy peaks, natural lake (Tal) , glacier,valley, ancient shrines, forts, pilgrimage, forest and wildlife. Adventure lovers can avail varrious sport options like Trekking, Rafting, Mountainering, Fishing, Biking, Skiing. Paragliding and many more things. Nandadevi is the highest peak in the state.
Air: Uttaranchal is connected by air. Two national airport are Jolly grant (near Dehradun) and Phoolbag (near Pantnagar). Regular flights are available from Delhi.
Rail: There are three major railway stations (Dehradun, Kathgodam and Haridwar) are connected to all parts of the country.
Road: Regular bus services are available from major cities in North India including Delhi to reach Dehradun and major towns of Uttaranchal.
